Beat The Winter Motivation Slump

Currently in the UK, it’s bloody cold.

It’s bloody dark.

And it’s bloody difficult to feel motivated.

Winter is in full swing and many of us are looking to retreat and hibernate. In this hibernating mood, many of us sigh a breath of relief.

‘Ah because it is cold I don’t have to go to the gym any more [a place I despise with a passion yet annually subscribe to]’.

‘I don’t have to start that new hobby [that I only signed up to because I felt pressured into having one].’

Many of us start the new year with intense resolutions and expectations of ourselves without thinking if they actually suit us. We start them because we feel like we need to and we don’t consider if we want to actually achieve them. We end up lamenting winter because we have a crash of motivation and fail to embark on these goals that we actually would rather not do. If you had no desire of pursuing them in the other parts of the year, what will make this season any different? The only thing you are doing is punishing yourself and setting yourself up for inevitable failure.

So many lament the winter because of this so called ‘loss of motivation’. However, I believe that this season is not to be lamented but reframed.

Winter is one of the best times for discernment. For working out what feels best for us in this moment. For not depriving our bodies of rest or a snack. It is the time to be most gentle and kind to ourselves. With this insight into who we are at our most introverted and least energetic, we can find methods, goals and systems that truly serve us in this season and that could potentially serve us in more mellow moments in the rest of the year.

So instead of being upset with yourself and your body. Give yourself some gratitude that your body is able to communicate what it feels and demonstrate what it can and cannot do.
